Puri was born in Nawanshahr, India, to Lala Nihal Chand and Ved Kaur. She is the only child of both mothers. His four siblings included his elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri (both of whom went into acting), his younger brother Harish Puri and his older sister Chandrakanta. As a graduate of the B.M. College in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, both in India and in Nepal.
In 1957, he married Urmila Divekar at the Shri Krishna Temple in Wadala. They have two children, a son named Rajeev Puri and a daughter named Namrata Puri. Rajeev is a successful businessman. After suffering a brain hemorrhage in 2005, he passed away in Mumbai at the age of 72. The first time Amrish attempted a screen test, he failed and had to seek employment with LIC. He also appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
