Angela Dorothea Kasner was born on 17 July 1954 in Hamburg, West Germany, the daughter of Horst Kasner and his wife, Herland. She was the daughter of a Protestant theologian and a teacher. During her time at school, she excelled in both Russian and mathematics. She attended the University of Leipzig between 1973 and 1978, studying physics.
