In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen came together to found Microsoft (originally called Micro-Soft). They adapted BASIC, a popular programming language, to make it easier to use on microcomputers. Microsoft and International Business Machine (IBM) were approached by the latter in 1980 with a proposal that Microsoft should develop the BASIC interpreter for IBM’s upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC. A $50,000 one-time fee was charged by Microsoft to IBM for the creation of the PC DOS operating system.
Microsoft’s operating systems quickly became very popular, and on November 20, 1985, the company introduced Windows as a graphical user interface alongside MS-DOS. Bill Gates, the company’s largest individual shareholder, amassed a great fortune. In 1989, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Office, which soon followed. This package integrated several applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, into one system used with all Microsoft products. MS Office was so successful that it gave Microsoft a virtual monopoly on operating systems for PCs.
Gates resigned as CEO of Microsoft in January 2000 but retained his position as chairman. In January 2000, he created a new part of Chief Software Architect. After spending a few years at Microsoft, he gradually delegated his duties to others and began to devote more time to philanthropic works. Having stepped down as Microsoft’s Chairman in 2014, he is currently serving as a technology advisor to Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO.
