It appears that in 1979, he joined what is known as the U.S. Army. He decided to join the army because his money from selling cannabis and stealing stereos was insufficient to support his girlfriend and daughter. After getting caught up in street crime, he became a jewel thief and a pimp. A few years later, he adopted Ice-T’s name after favorite writer, Iceberg Slim. A few years later, he recorded “The Coldest Rap.” The first time he was hospitalized was in 1985 after being injured in a car accident.
He performed at an open mic competition judged by the legendary Kurtis Blow in this period, and he was eager to pursue a professional rap career.
