In many of his autobiographical songs, Shawn Carter dealt drugs and flirted with gun violence during his rough adolescence. He attended Eli Whitney High School in Brooklyn, where he was a classmate of the soon-to-be-martyred rap legend Notorious B.I.G. As Jay-Z later remembered his childhood in one of his songs (“December 4”), “I went to school, got good grades, could behave when I wanted/ But I had demons deep inside that would raise when confronted.

In April 2008, he had a peaceful affair with singer/actress Beyonce Knowles. In 2001, The Blueprint (2001), featuring “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” cemented his status as one of the preeminent voices in hip-hop. As soon as the album came out, Jay-Z pleaded guilty to assault associated with a stabbing in a nightclub in 1999 and got three years’ probation, but that didn’t stop him. Jay-Z announced his retirement from performing before the release of The Black Album (2003). His farewell album became one of his most popular, with the cheeky track “99 Problems,” produced by Rick Rubin. A year later, he became the president of Def Jam Recordings, making him one of the industry’s highest-ranking African Americans. After retirement, Jay-Z stayed active in music. The rock group Linkin Park hired him for a collaboration in 2004.

He appeared as a guest vocalist on many other artists’ recordings, including Kanye West, whose career he helped develop, and Beyoncé, whom he began dating.  Jay-Z also built his business empire and invested in many business ventures, including a film production company, a clothing line, and a stake in the New Jersey Nets of the N.B.A., which he later helped relocate to Brooklyn. Kingdom Come was his first album since 2006. His tenure as Def Jam president ended shortly after the release of American Gangster. It became a full-service entertainment conglomerate shortly after Roc Nation was founded in 2008. As well as both songs, two other singles from the album won Grammys.
