Cena also made an unofficial appearance, making his unofficial debut as “The Prototype” for World Wrestling Federation in October 2000. The match was on an episode of the “SmackDown” taping in Oakland, California, on January 9, 2001. On March 13, he won that dark match against Aaron Aguilera, which was an MMA match the night before. After a few months, Cena began entering competitions and signing contracts.
In 2001, he signed his first contract with WWF, which ended up with Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). After signing the contract with the OVW, he held the title of Heavyweight for three months which was impressive. Moreover, he had the opportunity to participate in tryouts throughout the year for the roasts of WWF. Cena also joined the main roster in June 2002 and made his first television appearance on a SmackDown episode the following week against Kurt Angle. It was a narrow defeat for him, yet he became a fan favorite, a feud, and some of the biggest names in the game, from Christ Jericho to Eddie Guerrero to Albert to D-Von Dudley. As of October of the same year, Cena was showing his true colors for the first time in his career, declaring his hatred for his teammate Billy Kidman, who he blamed for their loss in the opening round of the first tag team championship tournament.
During this time, Cena showcased his rapping in a Halloween-themed episode and later gained popularity with the nickname “The Doctor of Thuganomics.” In 2003, he faced the Undertaker in a singles match but lost. The match that Cena won in 2004 was against the Big Show, who won the first singles championship for Cena. When Cena won the WWE title for the first time, he held it for four months before the then-Smack Down general manager Kurt Angle stripped him of the title after Cena accidentally attacked Angle in his wheelchair.
