Karan Johar began his career in the film industry as an assistant director on Aditya Chopra’s award-winning film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), regarded as a milestone in Hindi cinema. A year later, he debuted as a director with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). In the first half of the film, Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of an insensitive college student Shah Rukh Khan, along with his tomboyish best friend Kajol and the prettiest girl in his college (Rani Mukerji). In contrast, in the second half, the character of the now-widowed student attempts to reconnect with his friend who recently engaged to another man Salman Khan.
Johar joined forces with Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Banerjee to create Bombay Talkies (2013), celebrating Hindi cinema’s 100th anniversary. Each director made a short film for inclusion in the extensive anthology. The film is about a magazine editor Rani Mukerji who discovers that her husband (Randeep Hooda) is gay after a chance encounter with a fellow intern (Saqib Saleem). The film did not perform well at the box office but received positive reviews from critics.
The next film directed by Johar was a romantic drama titled Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Ranbir Kapoor played the role of a man dealing with an unrequited love for his best friend, Anushka Sharma. As well as Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played an older woman who is briefly involved with her character. Critical reviews were mixed to positive for the film as a commercial success. One critic referred to it as “Johar’s most mature film yet.”
