Rafael Nadal Parera was born in Manacor, Spain, on June 3, 1986. He is the son of Sebastián and his wife, Ana Maria Parera. The older of his two siblings, Maria Isabel, is younger than he is. Miguel Angel and Toni, one of his uncles, were both professional sportsmen–Miguel was a soccer player, and Toni was a tennis player. Tennis was Rafael’s first sport when he was three years old. He had already won a regional tennis tournament for under-12 players by 1998. His uncle Toni taught him how to play the guitar with his left hand, even though he is a right-handed player.

Nadal began his professional career at the age of 15 later that year. Nadal gained early success, becoming the ninth player in history to win an ATP match before 16.
