Dutt has two sisters named Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. In the 1972 film Reshma Aur Shera, in which his father starred, Dutt appeared briefly as a qawwali singer. In 1981, he debuted as an actor in Rocky (1981), directed by his father. His career turned around after the release of the crime thriller Naam (1985), followed by a series of commercially successful films.
